A representative from Yahoo! has said they are pulling out of the "back end" of the search engine war, but intend to continue competing on the front end, despite a possible deal with Microsoft.
A representative from Yahoo! has described the battle going on at the back end of search engines as a "megawatt war".
Prabhakar Raghaven, search strategy senior vice-president at Yahoo! Labs, made his comments in an interview with Agence France-Presse, after news that rival search engine Microsoft would be providing the power for its searches using Bing if a deal is cleared by regulators.
He said he believes that the fight between the big search engines has shifted to new frontiers.
"The back end of search is a megawatt war, and that is what we are getting out of," he said.
The newswire noted that Yahoo! is looking to present its search results in a smarter way than Microsoft's Bing does currently, even if they will both be using the same engine.
Mr Prabhakar told reporters this week that the two companies would continue to compete on the front end of searches and Yahoo! would not become just another version of Bing.
