Google has announced that people will now be able to make money from individual videos on YouTube as it is expanding its YPP scheme.
Google has announced that people will now be able to make money out of individual video productions posted on YouTube.
The YouTube Partnership Program (YPP) previously allowed Google to sell advertising against the videos of prolific users who were able contribute regularly, but now the company has opened up the scheme.
People will now be able to apply to have advertising placed on individual videos and then share in the revenue if they are accepted onto the scheme.
The post on the official Google blog read: "These individual video partnerships recognize the role popular 'one-off' videos play on YouTube."
In order to decide whether a link is eligible for "monetisation", the scheme will consider its popularity and virality, although it is currently only open users in the United States.
The San Francisco Chronicle this week reported that Google's Chief Financial Officer, Patrick Pichette, sees YouTube being profitable "in the not-too-distant future".
