Huge growth predicted for analogue mobile TV

Analogue mobile TV is estimated to have a worldwide user base of 54 million people in 2009 and is set to grow, whereas subscription-based services struggle, says new research.

Analogue mobile TV is estimated to have a worldwide user base of 54 million people in 2009 and is likely to continue its growth in the future, according to new research.

In a white paper produced by In-Stat, it is predicted that there will 300 million users by 2013.

The report claimed that even though plenty of emphasis has been placed on the digital switchover, in the majority of countries, analogue TV will still be broadcast, even after 2013.

In-Stat noted that subscription-based mobile TV has had a lower uptake than expected as not enough users around the world can afford the service.

On the other hand, analogue mobile TV simply involves the existing free-to-air signal being broadcast and the mobile device having a tuner to receive it.

The research, conducted in Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia and Turkey, showed that despite often only managing "satisfactory" picture and audio quality, the market is still growing.

O2 Ireland last week announced that it would be launching a new mobile TV subscription service called O2 TV.
