It is a natural progression for consoles to be used for social media as gamers will simply be offered different relevant content, says an industry expert.
Consoles are logical platforms for social media, as users have been comfortable going online with them for years, says an industry expert.
Tim Gibbon, founder of the Social Media Portal and director of Elemental Communications, claims that such adoption is a "natural progression", as consoles are already being used for non-gaming activities.
From this standpoint, he suggests that it is merely a case of offering consumers different relevant content on a device that they are happy using.
"Particularly from a social media perspective, gaming devices offer another way that users can interact with each other beyond gaming," he says.
Mr Gibbon's comments come after the news that from September 1st, BBC iPlayer will be available on the PS3.
Also released on that date will be a cheaper, slim-line version of the console, which will see a 32 per cent reduction in size, as well as being 36 per cent lighter.
